Computation is a common ground in all processes that binds NERO together. The definition of the design and fabrication processes are linked to a unique code that allows to generate different families of drones, switching easily to different sizes and proportions.

The code used for the design of the Drone controls also its fabrication and optimize material utilization. The process of fabrication allows in few minutes to have all necessary parts for the assembly of the frame structure.

DATA COLLECTION

planning autonomous flight

NERO can be programmed for autonomous flight using open source software such as Mission Planner. Data collected during the flight can be later analysed with the goal to extract useful information and to support decision-making, help understanding environmental conditions, detect patterns and develop new strategies of intervention.

DATA VISUALIZATION

a new method to read ndvi

We offer an interactive tool for real time analysis and visualisation, translating near-infrared pictures into NDVI data. We have developed an add-on to visualize NDVI Information for widely used 3D modeling and designing software: Rhino 3D – Grasshopper that allows users to interact directly with NDVI data and implement those information into their design.

ALDO SOLLAZZO

Aldo is an architect and researcher. Master in Architectonic Design in 2007, Master in Advanced Architecture at IAAC [Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalunya] in 2012, Fab Academy diploma in 2014 in the Fab Lab Barcelona, Aldo is an expert in computational design and digital fabrication. Since 2011, he is the manager of Noumena, founder of Fab Lab Frosinone and Director of Reshape – digital craft community.

CHIRAG RANGHOLIA

Chirag is an architect with expertise in digital fabrication and computational design. After completing architecture from CEPT, India, he furthered his interest through researching and developing interdisciplinary skills of architectural and parametric design at Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) in Spain, followed by expertise in digital tools and digital fabrication by graduating Fab Academy (Course by MIT’s Center For Bits and Atoms) from Fab Lab Barcelona.

STARSK LARA

Starsk development studies in the UFPS – Cucuta University – Colombia. Where he had the opportunity to explore digital tools and theories , absorbing from a critical use Proto – Architecture geometries. Result of the tools that had been used during their studies. Starsk moved to the city of Barcelona – Spain where he began working in the office of Willy Müller Architecture. Where have the opportunity to continue feeding their knowledge of architecture and meet new digital tools.

EFILENA BASETA

Efilena is an architect engineer, studied in the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), with a Master degree in Advanced Architecture from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). Her current interest lies in exploring material behaviors, physically and digitally, in order to create real time responsive architectural structures.

OUR STORY

NERO has started as final design project of Fab academy 2014, diploma course of MIT’s Centre for Bits and Atom. Main idea was to generate a theoretical and experimental framework, developing a drone to generate different types of database, translating different environmental conditions into visual outputs. Drones have potential to supplement past data collection techniques and contribute to ecosystem inventory and accounting. This process gathers the attention of Barcelona Regional. BR (Department of Urban Development of Barcelona) supported our project, interested in exploring with us new strategies of urban planning through data. Meanwhile, we started to organize educational events, generating opportunities to experiment our tool and strategies. At first, we started with DATAMATTER | environmental aerial robotics in Italy; participated in the event Pavilion of Innovation 2015 of Beyond Building Barcelona/Construmat in Barcelona curated by IAAC | FAB LAB Barcelona; organized a course for Instensif Numerique 2015 at ENSAPM (Ecole Nationalle Superieure de Paris Malaquais); now NERO is also part of a new master course “Master in Computational design and Making” in Paris. Aim behind all our activities is to stress the possibility of drone technology to be an active tool in defining environmental conditions.
